About this restoration

This miniature dresser is a Victorian-era salesman sample with a handwritten patent date of September 8, 1874. Traveling furniture salespeople used pieces like this to show customers exactly what a full-size dresser would look like before placing an order. It includes three working drawers, original porcelain knobs, burl veneer panels, an ornate mirror surround with pierced fretwork, and candle shelf brackets.

What we preserved

This was conservation work rather than a full refinish. A piece this old and rare should not be stripped into something new. The goal was to stabilize its condition, improve the surface, carefully address damaged veneer, and preserve as much original finish character as possible for the next generation.

What we did

  • Used traditional French polish to refresh and restore the surface while respecting the dresser’s original finish character.
  • Applied new veneer to the top where the original material had deteriorated and lifted.
  • Performed careful touch-up repairs across the surface to improve worn and damaged areas without overworking the piece.
  • Preserved original details including the porcelain knobs, working drawers, burl veneer panels, mirror surround, and Victorian fretwork.
  • Balanced sheen and color so repaired areas integrate naturally with the surviving antique surface.

Care tips

  • Keep the piece indoors in a stable environment away from heat vents, high humidity, and prolonged direct sunlight.
  • Dust gently with a dry, soft microfiber cloth; avoid commercial spray polishes and harsh cleaners.
  • Do not place wet objects directly on the top veneer surface.
  • Open drawers gently and avoid forcing any original hardware or mirror components.
  • For future surface work, repairs, or veneer concerns, use a furniture conservator or restoration professional rather than DIY products.
