Wood Dining Table Restoration in Fort Collins - Before

Tables We Refinish and Restore

If it has a top and legs, we work on it. Here’s what comes through our shop every week.

  • Dining tables. Solid wood, veneer, extension leaves, pedestal, trestle, farmhouse, formal, casual. Full top refinish or targeted repair depending on what the piece needs.
  • Antique tables. Queen Anne, Victorian, Empire, Federal, Mission, arts and crafts. Traditional finishes preserved wherever possible, full restoration when the piece requires it.
  • Mid-century tables. Heywood-Wakefield, Danish teak, Scandinavian rosewood, Skovby extending tables. We know these finishes and how to restore them without stripping the character out.
  • Coffee tables and side tables. From sculpted mid-century pieces to solid live-edge slabs.
  • Pedestal tables. Column, tripod, and quadruped bases fully rebuilt when damaged.
  • Trestle and farmhouse tables. Full stripping, staining, and durable topcoat for daily-use dining.
  • Water-damaged tables. Rings, blackened stains, swollen tops, delaminated veneer, warped surfaces.
  • Moving-damaged tables. Broken tops, missing trim, snapped legs, damaged extension mechanisms. When trim is missing we mold and fabricate replacements from scratch.
  • Custom-built tops. When the base is worth saving but the top is beyond rescue, or when you have an incredible base with no top, we build a new one in matching solid wood.

Our Table Refinishing Process

1. Photo Estimate

Text a photo to (970) 493-8737 or email shop@gmrestores.com. For most tables that is all we need to give you a real number. No obligation.

2. Assessment

When your table comes into the shop, we identify wood species (solid or veneer), joinery, existing finish type, and damage scope. We tell you honestly whether a full refinish is required or whether a targeted top-only refinish or spot repair will get you the same result for less.

3. Stripping

When the old finish has to come off, we do it in-house through our furniture stripping service. Careful chemical stripping preserves veneer, inlay, banded edges, and delicate carving. No aggressive sanding that thins the wood.

4. Structural Repair

Loose leaves re-glued. Split tops stabilized with dutchman patches or invisible fills. Broken legs, pedestals, or trestles rebuilt from matching solid stock in walnut, oak, mahogany, cherry, maple, or teak. Extension mechanisms realigned so leaves slide smoothly.

5. Surface Prep

Careful hand sanding through progressive grits. This is the invisible step that separates a shop-quality refinish from a driveway refinish. If the prep is wrong, no finish in the world will save it.

6. Staining and Color Matching

Custom-blended stains and toners to match your existing furniture, your décor, or a specific reference. When leaves and top need to match perfectly across separately-refinished panels, that only happens with hand-adjusted color at each stage.

7. Finish

The right finish for the table: ML Campbell conversion varnish for high-durability dining and coffee tables, traditional shellac or French polish for antiques and period pieces, oil finishes where the wood and use call for it. Dining tables get finishes that handle daily food, drink, and heat.

8. Free Pickup and Delivery

Throughout Fort Collins, Loveland, Windsor, Greeley, Wellington, Timnath, and the greater Denver metro. See our Denver metro furniture restoration service area for full details.

Recent Table Refinishing Projects

Every table has a story. Here are recent projects that show the range of what comes through our shop, from moving-day disasters to full custom fabrication to precise finish work on mid-century icons.

  • Danish Skovby SM32 Dining Table. Shattered pedestal, broken extension mechanism, and damaged cherry top after a tumble down eight stairs during a move. Full pedestal rebuild, mechanism realignment, and cherry top refinish. Glides open like the day it left Denmark.
  • Oval Mahogany Table Lip Repair. A moving company broke the lip trim clean off and couldn’t produce the missing piece. We made a mold of the original profile, fabricated a new lip from scratch, and blended the stain and sheen against the table’s banded inlay so seamlessly you would never know.
  • Solid Cherry Dining Table Refinish. Full stripping, prep across the main panels and both leaves, and a fresh finish that brought the deep warm cherry color flooding back. One of those pieces where the raw wood and the finished wood look like two different species.
  • Heywood-Wakefield Mid-Century Coffee Table. Full teardown, strip to bare wood, and refinish that restored the signature 1950s honey tone. Sculpted splayed legs and rounded top back to showroom condition.
  • Antique Carved Table Base with Custom Walnut Top. An extraordinary carved base with lion heads, grotesque faces, and acanthus leaves arrived with no top. We fabricated a solid walnut top from scratch and finished it in ML Campbell conversion varnish.
  • Mission Trestle Dining Table. Solid oak trestle table came in completely bare and unfinished. Full staining and finishing built up a rich, deep warm tone that made the oak grain absolutely sing.

Why Fort Collins Trusts G. Michael’s for Table Refinishing

20+ years refinishing Northern Colorado’s tables. Our shop on Hickory Street is staffed by master craftsmen who have refinished thousands of dining tables, antique tables, and specialty pieces. This is what we do every day.

We match tops, leaves, and bases across the whole piece. A dining table refinish is only as good as the color match across the top, the leaves, and the base. That is where most shops fall short. When our table leaves and top come back together, you cannot tell where one ends and the next begins.

We work with pieces others turn away. Moving disasters. Failed prior refinishes. Water damage that looks catastrophic. Antique tables with missing tops. Mid-century pieces where the finish is failing. Those are our daily work.

We use the right finish for the piece. A conversion varnish that will survive a decade of family dinners is not the same finish that belongs on a Victorian side table. We choose based on wood, era, and how the piece will be used. The principles that guide the Colorado State University wood-finishing guidelines shape our approach to every piece: understand the wood, respect the piece, use finishes that last.

Table Refinishing FAQs

How much does table refinishing cost in Fort Collins?

Table refinishing typically ranges from $400 to $1,500 depending on size, condition, wood species, and finish choice. A simple top-only refinish on a standard dining table starts around $400 to $600. A full refinish on a large dining table with leaves runs $800 to $1,200. Antique restoration, custom top fabrication, or extensive structural repair can range higher. Every quote is free. Send a photo to shop@gmrestores.com or call (970) 493-8737.

How long does table refinishing take?

Most dining table refinishes are completed in 2 to 4 weeks. Antique restoration, custom top fabrication, and extensive repair typically take 4 to 6 weeks. Simple top-only refinishes can be finished faster. You receive a firm timeline with every estimate.

Can you refinish only the top of my dining table?

Yes. When the base is in good shape and only the top needs work, a top-only refinish is often the smartest choice. It costs less and preserves the original character of the base. We can also refinish extension leaves separately and color-match them to a previously-refinished top.

Can water rings, heat marks, and deep scratches be removed?

Yes. Water rings, heat marks, and deep scratches typically require a full top refinish to remove completely. Light surface damage can sometimes be addressed with a spot treatment. When your table comes into the shop we tell you honestly which approach the damage requires.

Can you refinish antique tables without hurting their value?

Yes. Antique tables are refinished only when the original finish is beyond preservation. Whenever the original patina is salvageable, we preserve it using traditional techniques. Full restoration is available when the piece requires it through our antique furniture restoration service. We do not strip and refinish antique pieces unless it is the right decision for that specific table.

Can you match the finish of my existing furniture?

Yes. Color matching is one of our core specialties. We hand-blend stains and toners on-site to match your existing chairs, cabinets, or a customer reference. This is critical when refinishing a dining table that has to live alongside a matching sideboard or set of chairs.

Can you fix a table damaged by movers?

Yes. Moving damage on tables is one of the most common repairs we handle. Broken tops, cracked pedestals, snapped legs, missing trim, and damaged extension mechanisms can all be rebuilt. See our oval mahogany table lip repair and Danish Skovby restoration for examples.

Do you offer pickup and delivery?

Yes. Free pickup and delivery throughout Fort Collins, Loveland, Windsor, Greeley, and the greater Denver metro area including Boulder, Aurora, Lakewood, Arvada, and Evergreen.

What finish do you use on dining tables?

For most dining tables we use ML Campbell conversion varnish, the same finish used on high-end factory cabinetry. It handles daily food, drink, heat, and cleaning without dulling or scratching easily. For antique and period pieces we use traditional shellac, French polish, or oil finishes based on what fits the piece and how it will be used.
