Our Cabinet Repair Process
Photo Estimate or Shop Visit
Start by sending us photos and a short description of the cabinet. For many freestanding pieces, that gives us enough information to provide an initial assessment. For built-ins or more complex projects, we may recommend an on-site visit or a closer shop evaluation.
Diagnosis and Treatment Plan
We assess the wood species, joinery, finish type, age, and extent of damage. We explain what can be repaired without refinishing, what may need rebuilding, and what approach makes the most sense for the piece.
Structural Repair
Loose joints are re-glued, split panels are stabilized, and weakened areas are reinforced. If a drawer, door, trim component, or support piece is missing or beyond repair, we fabricate a matching replacement in the appropriate wood species whenever possible.
Hardware and Mechanism Repair
We repair or replace hinges, drawer mechanisms, locks, pulls, and other cabinet hardware as needed. On older pieces, we try to preserve original character and use replacement hardware thoughtfully.
Finish Work
Original finishes are preserved whenever it makes sense to do so. When refinishing is necessary, we match the work to the piece and its use. For cabinets where the finish is too far gone to save, we also handle full stripping and surface prep through our furniture stripping service:
https://gmrestores.com/furniture-stripping-in-fort-collins
Color Matching
Color matching is one of the most important parts of cabinet restoration. Our goal is to blend repaired areas carefully with the surrounding finish, tone, and sheen so the work fits the piece naturally.
Pickup and Delivery
Pickup and delivery are available for many projects throughout Fort Collins, Loveland, Windsor, Greeley, Timnath, Wellington, and much of the Denver metro. For more on how we work with clients outside Fort Collins, see our Denver furniture restoration page:

Why Clients Choose G. Michael’s Restoration in Fort Collins
Cabinet repair is not just about hiding damage. Good restoration protects structure, respects the original design, and avoids shortcuts that create bigger problems later.
Clients come to us when they want:
– thoughtful repair instead of a one-size-fits-all fix
– careful work on antique and vintage cabinets
– honest guidance on whether a cabinet is worth restoring
– better color and finish matching
– a shop that handles both structural and surface problems
We regularly take on cabinet repairs that need more than a simple cosmetic touch-up. That includes pieces with failed joinery, missing parts, finish breakdown, veneer damage, and water-related problems that require a more complete restoration approach.
For antique and heirloom pieces, our approach is guided by the same general conservation principles used by preservation professionals: preserve original material whenever possible, repair carefully, and avoid unnecessary loss of character. Kitchen Cabinet Repair in Fort Collins
Kitchen cabinets take more daily wear than almost any other woodwork in the home. Doors get out of alignment, hinges loosen, drawers start sticking, slides wear out, and sink-base cabinets can swell or separate after years of moisture exposure. In many cases, the cabinet boxes are still solid and do not need to be replaced. They simply need the right repair work.
At G. Michael’s Restoration, we repair damaged kitchen cabinets for homeowners in Fort Collins and nearby Northern Colorado communities. Common repairs include loose or sagging cabinet doors, worn hinges, broken drawer boxes, damaged drawer slides, separated face frames, lifting veneer, missing trim, cracked wood, and water damage around sinks, dishwashers, and plumbing lines.
When repair makes more sense than replacement, we focus on keeping as much of the original cabinetry as possible. That can mean rebuilding a drawer, fabricating a missing piece, securing a loose frame, repairing veneer, or matching the color and sheen of the existing finish. For older kitchens, custom cabinets, and solid wood cabinetry, careful repair can often save money while preserving the character and fit of the original installation.
Cabinet Door Repair in Fort Collins
Cabinet doors are often the first part of a kitchen to show problems. A door may not close flush, rub against the frame, hang unevenly, or pull loose from the hinge side. Sometimes the issue is a simple hinge adjustment. Other times, the wood around the hinge has split, the stile or rail has cracked, or the door itself has started to warp.
We repair cabinet doors with attention to both structure and appearance. That may include tightening or replacing hinges, repairing cracked rails and stiles, filling damaged screw holes, correcting alignment, stabilizing loose joints, or rebuilding damaged areas so the door works properly again. If a cabinet door is missing or too damaged to save, we can often fabricate a replacement that fits the existing cabinet opening.
Finish matching is an important part of cabinet door repair. A repaired door should not look like an obvious patch. We work to blend color, sheen, grain, and age so the repaired area fits naturally with the rest of the kitchen or built-in cabinetry.
Cabinet Drawer Repair in Fort Collins
A broken cabinet drawer can make an otherwise good kitchen frustrating to use. Drawers may stick, sag, fall off their tracks, separate at the corners, or stop closing all the way. In older cabinets, wood runners can wear down. In newer cabinets, metal slides can bend, loosen, or pull away from the drawer box.
We repair cabinet drawers by addressing the actual failure, not just forcing the drawer back into place. Depending on the problem, we may rebuild a broken drawer box, repair dovetail or corner joints, replace damaged slides, restore wood runners, reinforce weak areas, or adjust the drawer so it moves smoothly again. If a drawer is missing, we can build a custom replacement to match the opening and function of the original cabinet.
Drawer repair is often a better option than replacing an entire cabinet section, especially when the cabinet face, frame, and surrounding finish are still in good condition. A properly repaired drawer should feel solid, slide cleanly, and look like it belongs with the rest of the kitchen.
Service Area
We serve clients throughout Fort Collins and nearby Northern Colorado communities, including Old Town, City Park, Midtown, Rigden Farm, the Harmony Corridor, Loveland, Windsor, Greeley, Timnath, Wellington, and surrounding areas. For many freestanding projects, we also work with clients across the Denver metro.
Cabinet Repair FAQs
How much does cabinet repair cost in Fort Collins?
Cabinet repair pricing depends on the scope of work. A small drawer rebuild may cost a few hundred dollars, while full restoration of an antique cabinet, built-in, or heavily damaged piece can cost more. Every estimate is custom, so the best first step is to send photos and a short description.
Can you repair antique cabinets without damaging the original finish?
Yes. When the original finish is salvageable, we use repair methods that preserve as much original material and patina as possible. Full refinishing is only recommended when the existing finish is too damaged to save. For related heirloom work, see our antique furniture restoration page:
https://gmrestores.com/antique-furniture-restoration
Do you repair water-damaged kitchen cabinets?
Yes. We repair swollen panels, delaminated veneer, damaged frames, and finish failure caused by leaks or moisture exposure. Many water-damaged cabinets can be repaired for less than full replacement, depending on the extent of the damage.
Can you build a missing cabinet drawer or door from scratch?
Yes. We fabricate replacement drawers, doors, drawer boxes, and decorative parts in matching wood species whenever possible, then work to blend the color and finish with the existing cabinetry.
Do you offer pickup and delivery?
Yes. Pickup and delivery are available for many projects throughout Fort Collins, Loveland, Windsor, Greeley, and much of the Denver metro. For more service-area context, see our Denver restoration page:
https://gmrestores.com/furniture-restoration-denver
How long does cabinet repair take?
Smaller repairs may be completed in a week or two. Full restoration, custom fabrication, or extensive water-damage work usually takes longer. We provide timing guidance with each estimate based on the condition of the piece and the work involved.
Do you work with kitchen designers and contractors?
Yes. We work with homeowners, designers, and contractors when a project calls for cabinet repair, restoration, finish correction, or preserving existing cabinetry instead of replacing it outright.
