About this restoration

This solid cherry dining table top came through our Fort Collins shop for a full refinish. Cherry is one of those woods that transforms dramatically during the restoration process — stripped back, it looks pale and almost pinkish-blonde; finished correctly, it develops the deep warmth and richness that make cherry such a distinctive furniture wood.

What was wrong

The table’s existing finish had worn unevenly and no longer presented a consistent tone across the surface. One of the clearest signs was the contrast between the freshly sanded main panels and the leaves still carrying the old finish — the same wood reading like two completely different colors. That is exactly why proper stripping and preparation matter on cherry.

What we did

  • Fully stripped the old finish from the tabletop to remove the worn surface and expose the raw cherry underneath.
  • Completed surface preparation across the main panels and both leaves so the full top could finish evenly as one piece.
  • Corrected color inconsistency between the main surface and the leaves through proper prep and finishing, not shortcuts.
  • Applied a fresh finish system to bring back cherry’s natural warmth, depth, and rich dining-room tone.
  • Balanced sheen and color throughout so the table reads as one cohesive restored surface.

Care tips

  • Use placemats, coasters, and felt pads to protect the top from scratches, heat, and moisture rings.
  • Wipe spills promptly and do not leave standing water on the surface or around the leaves.
  • Clean with a soft microfiber cloth; avoid harsh chemical cleaners, silicone sprays, and abrasive pads.
  • Keep the table away from prolonged direct sunlight and heat vents, as cherry naturally changes color with age and light exposure.
  • If the finish begins to dull or show wear in high-use areas, book maintenance early.
