What was wrong
This antique round oak pedestal table had a finish that had deteriorated past the point where touch-up work would produce a convincing result. The worn areas were especially noticeable across the carved claw-and-ball feet, turned column, and transitions between the round top and pedestal base.
What we did
- Complete strip of the existing finish from the round top, apron, turned column, carved legs, and claw-and-ball feet.
- Careful surface preparation across carved recesses and turned profiles without softening the original detail.
- Multi-stage dark brown color development for a rich, historically appropriate tone.
- Quarter-sawn oak grain enhancement so the medullary ray figure remains visible through the darker finish.
- Protective topcoat system applied and leveled across the complete table for even sheen and long-term durability.
- Final inspection under multiple lighting conditions to confirm consistency from top to base.
Care tips
- Use placemats, coasters, and felt pads; avoid dragging items across the round top.
- Clean with a soft microfiber cloth; avoid harsh cleaners, silicone sprays, or abrasive pads.
- Wipe spills promptly and avoid prolonged heat or moisture exposure.
- Use care around the carved claw-and-ball feet when moving the table; lift rather than drag.
- If the finish begins to dull or wear unevenly, book maintenance early.
