About this restoration

This antique oak flat file cabinet, also known as a map cabinet or blueprint cabinet, spent more than a century in Larimer County. Its wide, shallow drawers were built to store maps, drawings, and documents flat, and a few surviving drawer labels still hint at the working life this piece once had.

What was wrong

The cabinet arrived with a dark, tired, water-stained finish that concealed the best part of the piece: the oak underneath. Years of use had left the surface worn and dull, and the top no longer showed the grain, warmth, and visual depth that made the cabinet worth saving.

What we did

  • Completed full repair work to stabilize and restore the cabinet before refinishing.
  • Removed the dark, worn finish so the original oak surface and grain could come back into view.
  • Refinished the cabinet completely to restore warmth, clarity, and usable protection across the piece.
  • Preserved the working character of the wide shallow drawers and the antique map-cabinet form.
  • Brought back the oak top as the visual centerpiece of the restoration, revealing the grain that had been buried under years of wear.
  • Balanced tone and sheen so the cabinet reads as restored history, not a modern replacement.

Care tips

  • Dust with a soft microfiber cloth; avoid abrasive pads and harsh chemical cleaners.
  • Do not place wet objects, plants, or drinks directly on the oak top.
  • Open and close the shallow drawers gently to protect the original cabinet structure.
  • Use care around old labels, drawer fronts, and hardware so the cabinet’s working history is preserved.
  • Keep the piece away from heat vents, high humidity, and prolonged direct sunlight.
  • If the finish begins to dull or the drawers become difficult to operate, book maintenance early.
