About this restoration

This antique dresser includes a concealed compartment beneath its lift-top lid — a hidden space that may once have held jewelry, letters, valuables, or other private belongings. The restoration focused on bringing the entire piece back into view while preserving the character and story built into its original design.

What was wrong

Years of grime, oxidation, and an increasingly dark finish had buried the dresser’s original wood character. The hidden compartment interior, drawer fronts, turned legs, and other details were all obscured beneath a surface that no longer reflected the quality of the piece underneath.

What we did

  • Stripped the old finish back to bare pale wood to remove the darkened, deteriorated surface layers.
  • Cleaned and prepared the full dresser including the lift-top compartment, drawer fronts, turned legs, and exterior casework.
  • Restored clarity to the wood grain so the natural character of the antique could be seen again.
  • Applied a warm natural finish to bring depth and life back without making the dresser look artificially new.
  • Balanced color and sheen throughout so the visible exterior and hidden compartment read as one cohesive restoration.

Care tips

  • Use a soft microfiber cloth for regular dusting; avoid abrasive pads and harsh chemical cleaners.
  • Wipe spills promptly, especially on the lift-top surface and around drawer edges.
  • Open the hidden compartment gently and avoid forcing the lid or hinge area.
  • Keep the dresser away from direct heat vents, high humidity, and prolonged sunlight.
  • If the finish begins to dull or the lid and drawers become difficult to operate, book maintenance early.
