Solid Pine Closet Restoration in Fort Collins

When this solid pine closet arrived at our shop, it came with a story. A customer’s grandfather had built it entirely by hand — nearly 7 feet tall and 9 feet wide of real craftsmanship. Over the years it had been painted with a full Southwestern mural: chili peppers across every door panel, lizards and turquoise zigzag borders running along the top. Bold, personal, and full of character.

The family wanted it transformed. Same bones, whole new soul. For us, that is exactly the kind of project we are here for.

Wooden furniture restoration in Fort Collins

Project Overview

This project included:

  • Complete removal of the painted Southwestern decorative layer from all surfaces

  • Full surface preparation through progressive sanding of solid pine

  • Staining in a rich, warm tone to complement the natural pine grain

  • Hardware cleaning and reset to match the new finish

  • Full wood closet restoration across a structure nearly 63 square feet in total surface area

Why This Pine Closet Restoration Was More Than a Simple Refinish

Removing a painted decorative scheme from solid pine without damaging the underlying wood is not a straightforward task. Paint removal at this scale, across paneled doors and detailed joinery, requires patience and a careful approach at every stage.

Handmade furniture like this also carries irregularities that mass-produced pieces do not. Surfaces are not always perfectly uniform. Panels respond differently to stripping and sanding. Getting a consistent, clean result across a structure this large means reading the wood and adjusting the approach as you go. That is exactly the kind of work our furniture stripping and paint removal service is built around.

What We Assessed Before Starting

Before any stripping or surface work began, we evaluated the full scope of what the piece needed:

  • Depth and adhesion of the painted decorative layers across all panels and surfaces

  • Condition of the solid pine beneath the paint and how it would respond to stripping

  • Structural integrity of the handmade joinery across the full cabinet

  • Hardware condition and whether cleaning and resetting would be sufficient

Our Process: The Strip-Down

We are not a shop that takes shortcuts on preparation. The quality of the final finish depends entirely on what happens before any stain or topcoat touches the wood.

Every inch of the painted decoration was carefully removed from the solid pine across all door panels, the cabinet body, and the decorative border across the top. The goal throughout was to reach clean, undamaged wood without compromising the original surface beneath. On a piece this size, built entirely by hand, that requires working carefully around joints, panel edges, and detailed areas that a machine cannot reach.

By the time stripping and surface preparation were complete, the pine was clean, even, and ready for finish.

The Refinish: Letting the Wood Breathe Again

With the paint fully removed and the surface prepared, the next phase was choosing and applying a finish that would honor what the grandfather originally built.

Solid pine has a warmth and grain character that deserves to be seen. We stained the entire piece in a rich, warm tone that works with the natural figure of the pine rather than covering it. The result is a finish that feels appropriate to the age and craft of the piece — not overly modern, not heavy, just warm and clean and right.

The grain shows through clearly. The color is even across all panels. And the piece finally looks the way it was meant to look when it was built. If you want to understand how professional refinishing compares to DIY approaches for pieces like this, the Colorado State University Extension program on wood finishing and home preservation is a useful reference for homeowners thinking through their options.

The Details: Hardware Cleaned and Reset

The hardware on this piece was original and worth keeping. We cleaned everything thoroughly and reset it to sit correctly against the new finish. Small details like this matter on a restoration of this scale — hardware that looks out of place with a new finish pulls the whole result back.

Properly reset, the hardware complements the new finish rather than competing with it.

Final Result: A Completely Transformed Solid Pine Closet

The finished piece left our shop looking exactly as it should — clean, warm, and timeless:

  • Appearance: rich warm stain with natural pine grain visible throughout

  • Structure: all original handmade joinery fully intact and undamaged

  • Details: original hardware cleaned and reset to complement the finished piece
